Dehydration

decaf green tea caffeine content

During my diet experiments, I found two less-well-known candidates for causing dehydration: too much fiber, and too few carbohydrates. I'm not sure which one (or both) was the cause of dehydration, but you can read more in these articles: Fiber Can Cause Dehydration and Carbohydrates Increase Energy.

Dehydration can be linked to restless feet, hot flushes, brain fog, tiredness, hormone imbalances, premature aging, addictions, and almost any other problems in the body and mind. The most common cause of headaches is dehydration. Also, if you are constipated, the first remedy should be to drink more water.

A high-quality water source will make it easier to become hydrated. Also, adequate natural salt, surprisingly enough, is important for hydration (even though too much of and the wrong kind of salt is dehydrating). The same is true of other minerals. Stay away from diuretics, such as caffeine and alcohol, as well as from dehydrating foods, such as sugar.

Sweating a lot (baths, saunas, exercise), being in a hot environment, salty sea air, and central heating (processed air) can increase the body's need for water.

According to a Chinese Doctor, kidney weakness may be behind the body's fluid imbalances - use herbs and lifestyle changes to strengthen the kidneys. She also says that stress causes bad kind of heat in the body which increases the body's need for fluids. Other sources say that adequate levels of potassium and sodium are important for both hydration and proper kidney function.

If you need inspiration on staying well-hydrated, read: Cellular Awakening (book summary).

Diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and other conditions can make you more thirsty than usual as well.

Your Body's Many Cries for Water: You're Not Sick; You're Thirsty: Don't Treat Thirst with Medications by F. Batmanghelidj:

Note also that many people report that adequate hydration is required for your body to be able to function properly electrically and energetically.

Hydration of the Cells

Your body's every single cell needs oxygen, water and nutrients to function properly. If you get enough absorbable minerals (ideally in ionic form) from your food, drink and supplements, they will be transported to the cells in the blood plasma. Out of the four macrominerals, sodium and potassium are needed for the 'sodium-potassium pump' to work properly, which is one of the mechanisms the cell has to take nutrients into the cell and push toxins out of the cell. Water can either get into the cell via the sodium-potassium pump or - if the water consists of small enough molecules - it can get through the cell membrane via protein pathways ('facilitated diffusion'). This process is explained in more detail here: Cell Membrane Permeability.

Adequate sodium, potassium, other macrominerals, trace minerals and water are all crucial to proper hydration of the cells (and therefore proper hydration of the body). Exercise is important because it speeds up the metabolism and enables the cell exchanges (of water, nutrients, toxins, etc.) in and out of the cell to be speeded up and more energy to be generated for the body. From Wikipedia: "Cellular respiration is a set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms to convert biochemical energy from nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and then release waste products."

Some types of water may be easier for the body to utilise than others. In other words, some water may be better at hydrating you. The science of this under debate at the moment, however. Many people believe that tap water is not as easy to utilise due to the processing and filtration it goes through. Some, e.g. Dr. Pollack, believe that the best water is 'structured', which is achieved by sunlight or infrared radiation. Live spring water and water in raw foods (especially in fruits) is considered best by those who believe that living natural water holds energetic benefits. Some people believe that adding lemon juice to water 'charges' it and helps to structure it. Magnets may change the water, the molecule size of different waters may be different, and water may carry certain frequenzes, nutrients and oxygen. The pH of the water is considered to be important too. Therefore the science of water is complex but drinking natural spring water is probably the best bet.

Note that Dr. Batmanghelidj's book 'Your Body's Many Cries for Water' explains that dehydration symptoms can include asthma, inflammation, allergies, multiple sclerosis, cancer, stress, pain, etc.

I have noticed that drinking 2 pints of water each morning before breakfast, with liquid ionic minerals added, greatly reduces my histamine intolerance symptoms.

Dementia

Read: "Dementia on the G8 Agenda: The Good, the Bad, and the Encouraging News" (external link). The article suggests that healthy food, i.e. diet rich in vegetables and low in meat, is better than drugs to fight dementia. It also quotes a research study which found that supplementing with 2000 IU of vitamin E per day slowed the decline of the disease. Those taking vitamin E also functioned significantly better in daily life.

The above article also states that 70% of those with dementia have Alzheimer's. You may also wish to read the entry here on Alzheimer's disease natural remedies.

Depression

Depression is a complicated problem with potentially some very simple solutions.

Depression, especially in pre-menopausal or postmenopausal women can also be due to estrogen deficiency. See: "Natural Remedies for Menstrual Cramps" for a general discussion on women's hormone imbalances, their causes and how to remedy these naturally.

Spending time in nature and exercise have both shown to be very helpful in reducing depression. And at least in milder cases of depression meditation can be very beneficial, as it boosts the brain's 'happy hormones'.

Bright light has not only been shown to help seasonal affective disorder (winter-time depression) but also other types of depression. Natural daylight and full-spectrum light sources are the best in this case. Read also the entry on seasonal affective disorder.

According to Dr. Lawrence Wilson, high levels of toxic calcium in the body may be linked to depression, emotional numbness, psychological withdrawal, sexual numbness and lowered awareness level. He calls this 'calcium shell'. (9)

Copper toxicity or copper deficiency may be a contributing factors. See also: Brain Allergies.

Psilocybin of magic mushrooms has been shown to treat depression and other mental health problems. Read more on this topic under anxiety.

In the documentary Food Matters Dr. Andrew W Saul gave the following example of niacin therapy on a suicidally depressed person. She was advised to take 3,000mg of niacin per day or as much as was needed. She got up to 11,500 mg of niacin per day and the depression disappeared. When she stopped taking niacin the depression came back.

Dr. Mercola and many other doctors highlights the importance of gut health in overcoming depression. See: intestinal dysbiosis. Intestinal dysbiosis is often an important component, if not a full cause, of depression. Mental health and gut health are very closely linked - do an internet search for 'intestinal dysbiosis depression' and 'the gut is your second brain' to understand this better. Note that systemic candida overgrowth may be an underlying cause of both intestinal dysbiosis and depression.

"Depressed patients with low folic acid levels that do not respond well to anti-depressants often improve significantly with folic acid supplementation. High B12 levels are similarly associated with improved outcome in depression." - Dr. Raymond J Pataracchia on Alternativementalhealth.com, "Orthomolecular treatment for Depression, Anxiety & Behavior Disorders"

Diabetes

Book: "There is a Cure for Diabetes" by Dr. Gabriel Cousens

Also you may wish to attend or visit the website of Dr Cousens' Tree of Life Health Center and their Diabetes Recovery Programme ( treeoflifecenterus.com/diabetes-recovery-program ).

Dr. Joel Fuhrman: "The End of Diabetes: The Eat to Live Plan to Prevent and Reverse Diabetes":

Ian Brighthope: "The Vitamin Cure for Diabetes":

Watch the documentary: Raw for 30 Days, which shows how people were able to get off insulin following a raw food diet. Type 1 diabetics improved on the diet as well, although Type 2 diabetics got faster and better results.

Dr. Brian Clement explains in a You Tube video entitled: "Diabetes, Sugar Addiction and Other Diseases" that Type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease and can be healed by a low-fat, low-sugar diet, while following the Hippocrates Health Institute's recommended (raw food) diet. Type 1 Diabetes, he says, can sometimes be reversed but not always. But even those who can't reverse it will gain better health and be possibly able to reduce insulin, according to him. One of the causes of Type 1 diabetes, he says, are mothers being gluten-intolerant or having Celiac Disease while pregnant.

In another video ("How to Eliminate Sugar Addiction") Dr. Clement quotes research results that maybe upward of 40% of the people who have type 1 diabetes have an allergy to gluten or celiac disease. So, he says, watch out what you eat in the form of grains and even if you're eating raw grains, go to the heavier protein ones, like millet and quinoa and taf. Any cooked grain, wholegrain or not, should be out of your diet, according to Dr. Clement.

Although both Dr. Clement and Dr. Cousens recommend a raw food and low-sugar diet, Dr. Gabriel Cousens' diet seems to allow for more fat consumption.

For information on diabetic circulatory problems, look into Dr. Matthias' Rath's work on Dr. Rath Health Foundation website.

Please note also that a mycoplasma infection may be a causative factor in Type II diabetes.

In the juice fasting documentary: 'Superjuice Me' (summary here), some people juice fasting for 28-days report improvements in diabetes symptoms. I wouldn't recommend this approach without a doctor's supervision, however, since especially fruit juices, but also vegetable juices can be too sugary for many with insulin resistance and/or diabetes.

Note that according to Jeffrey McCombs (a candida expert) diabetes-like symptoms may be linked to systemic candida overgrowth.

Diarrhea

Sometimes diarrhea can be a sign of a serious illness and doctor's help should be sought at first instance. It can be also caused by food poisoning, a stomach flu, laxatives, or too much of certain foods or natural herbs (e.g. prune juice or senna).

Chronic diarrhea may be linked to intestinal dysbiosis, systemic candida overgrowth, food allergies or intolerances, among other things.

For someone with diarrhea, it is very important to ensure enough liquids and electrolyte minerals, as these are lost through body fluids.

Digestive Problems

Candida overgrowth and intestinal dysbiosis are typical problems often underlying conditions like leaky-gut syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, etc.

Food intolerances, allergies, and stress can be a major causes of digestive disturbances.

Gut health has been increasingly linked with mental health also.

Parasites are a major cause of stomach pain and other digestion-related problems.

"Heartburn, gas, bloating, constipation and general indigestion are often the first signs of problems related to mineral deficiencies and imbalances, poor protein digestion, sodium deficiency and calcium excess in over 90 percent of patients." - Robert Thompson, MD, and Kathleen Barnes in (book): "The Calcium Lie II: What Your Doctor STILL Doesn't Know". They advice that these interlinked problems can be gradually resolved with ionic mineral supplementation, ideally informed by HTMA mineral analysis performed by Trace Elements Inc (lab), and by secondary means of good diet and individually-tailored supplementation of wholefood based vitamins. 90% of people also need to eat more sea salt (Celtic), to counter sodium deficiency, they advice. Ear Infection Home Remedy

Colloidal silver may be helpful for this, a drop in each ear. But please research the type of colloidal silver to use to ensure it's safe before trying this.

I have also heard that a piece of garlic placed in the ear can help. Be careful, don't make the garlic piece too small as to go inside the ear because it may harmful or difficult to get out. The garlic should be like an earplug, visible and only slightly inside the ear.

I suspect the reason both of these work is because they are natural antibiotics.

Eczema

Jeffrey McCombs states that eczema can be caused by systemic candida overgrowth.

Helpful short-term remedies may be: coconut oil, sea salt spray, sea water, sunlight (or sunbed) and magnesium baths. Longer-term probiotics may help to improve gut health and overcome intestinal dysbiosis which may be linked to skin problems. Addressing gut health and any digestive issues in general may be key to eliminating this problem for good.

Note that both eczema and digestive problems can flare up with stress.

Edema

Edema, also called oedema, is a condition where too much fluid is retained in the body's tissues and cavities and usually manifests as swelling in all or some parts of the body. It can be caused by injury or inflammation. To rule out chronic conditions requiring medical care (e.g. dangerous infections, heart disease, burns, liver disease, other illnesses, kidney disease, etc.) please consult your doctor, first of all. Mild edema is common during pregnancy.

Endometriosis

"Endometriosis involves series 2 prostaglandins. It should, therefore, be helpful to add [omega 3] fatty acids from flax or fish to the diet to down-regulate excessive PG2 production. Often, candida is involved in endometriosis. This should be treated. Soybean products and flax may also be helpful. [..]

"Nutrient enrichment and better nutritional balance, improved life-style, and detoxification should improve endometriosis. More research is needed."

- Udo Erasmus in Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill, pp. 350-351
"Areas where endometrial tissue grows in the body become very inflamed, and the long-lasting inflammation prevents the body from properly healing. Therefore, one of the most important things for an endometriosis sufferer to do is to reduce the amount of inflammation in the body." - "Curing Endometriosis Through Natural Methods" on Healthwyze.org, written by Sarah C. Corriher

Points made in the above article, summarized:

  • Pregnancy cures or provides relief from endometriosis.
  • Women with endometriosis have an 87% chance of depression, 88% chance of mild to moderate anxiety.
  • Medication, birth control pills, and operations provided as treatment by mainstream medicine are not adequate and do not promote holistic health and wellbeing.
  • Endometriosis sufferers are four times more likely to have allergy problems and also four times more likely to suffer from migraines.
  • This condition is caused by liver dysfunction. The liver regulates hormones, including estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.
  • Increases in estrogen make endometriosis more severe.
  • Dioxins in sanitary towels and tampons could make endometriosis worse (research by the Endomeriosis Association, USA). Dioxins are a byproduct of chlorination.
  • Alcoholic women are more likely to have endometriosis, probably because drinking puts a strain on the liver.
  • Oxidation due to bad diet and too little anti-oxidants increases the risk of endometriosis.
  • Being sexually active can reduce endometriosis symptoms.
  • Eeating iron is essential, best digested from beef.
  • Avoid chlorinated foods, e.g.: white sugar, white flour, white rice.
  • Avoid growth-hormones by avoiding processed meat.
  • Never use homogenized milk as it's one of the most inflammatory food out there.
  • Phytoestrogens in soy products can cause major hormone instability - avoid soy.
  • Avoid drinking chlorinated water (most tap water). Install a shower filter since inhaled chlorine vapours are very inflammatory.
  • Almost all chemical additives are very inflammatory - avoid processed foods.
  • Support and detoxify the liver.
  • "Some sufferers proclaim that marijuana is more effective in helping with endometriosis than the expensive prescription pain medications."
"Exercise in the week prior to the menstrual cycle can be very beneficial. Sweating is the only way to cleanse the lymph nodes, and endometriosis is a disease that is often influenced by toxicity." - Sarah C. Corriher (link as above)

Research findings show Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) to be effective in treating endometriosis:

"Being gluten free is almost a must with this condition. Inflammation from gluten sensitivity aggregates the side effects by possibly feeding the scar tissue internally." - Gizmo on Amazon Book Reviews, reviewing: "The Doctor Will See You Now: Recognizing and Treating Endometriosis" by Tamer Seckin MD.

"Endometriosis: A Key to Healing Through Nutrition" by Dian Shepperson Mills, Michael Vernon:

This book states that endometriosis is an auto-immune disease. It advises to:

  • Eliminate dairy (inflammatory food which has harmful hormones - goats cheese and organic cheese are better).
  • Eliminate wheat (wheat crop has hormones to make it more resistant to disease).
  • Eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.
  • Eliminate red meat and if necessary, eat in moderation and organic. A study has found a link between endometriosis and red meat.
  • Try to eat organic as much as you can.

Epilepsy

Vitamin D3 supplementation, raw food diet, and eliminating MSG have shown some promise in helping this condition. Food allergies and mineral and other nutritional deficiencies (see: 'brain allergies') should definitely be tested for, and all processed foods eliminated, in favour of organic wholefoods - to eliminate all symptoms caused by chemicals.

Copper toxicity may also be a factor.

Dr. Coca in his book the Pulse Test, mentions symptoms of epilepsy as potential food intolerance symptoms.

Eyesight, Poor

Vitamin A is important for good eyesight. Many people are not able to get enough A vitamin from vegetables due to lack of enzymes. Supplementation or eating the liver of animals or liver oil of fish may be important. Synthetic A vitamins can be harmful, however.

Lutein is a carotenoid found in many green vegetables and is linked to improved eye and heart health. Eat green vegetables with butter, coconut oil, cocoa butter or avocado to improve the absorption of this nutrient in the digestive system.

Goji berries have and "extraordinary amount" of eye-health-improving carotenoid, zeaxanthin, according to David Wolfe (in Longevity Now). He says that recent research indicates that goji berries can help protect the eyesight of the elderly.
