Both types of solutions are discussed in this article: short-term relief for arthritis pain as well as long-term solutions that require lifestyle changes. The information in this article is collected from some of the world's leading nutritional researchers, alternative health practitioners and doctors. There is plenty of reason to believe that given the right conditions, the human body is perfectly capable of reversing and healing arthritis.
Mostly natural home remedies for arthritis are discussed here but also some natural treatments and retreats. In summary, to enable the body to heal arthritis, one must address inflammation, calcification, acidity, the immune system and the metabolic rate.
"Arthritis; rheumatism; rheumatoid- and osteoarthritis; related ailments: These problems are among the oldest ailments, so old that anthropologists have discovered that even dinosaurs suffered from them. However, they can be successfully treated at home using the following means: Living vegetarian/ vegan foods, [...] weight control and regulation, [...] water exercise, [...] herbal remedies, [...] ice packs, [...] heat packs, [...] massage, [...] whole-food vitamin C, [and] exclusive consumption of raw living food."
- Dr. Brian Clement, p. 111-112, 'Longevity, Enjoying Long Life Without Limits'
"Build a body out of the best foods ever so that the body can eliminate estrogen dominance, lower calcification, and maintain flexibility. We have the potential to live free from arthritis, inflammation, joint problems, heart problems, wrinkles, cancer, cellulite, cysts, etc."

Dr. Mercola explains that there are two completely different types of arthritis: osteoarthritis, which is commonly seen in older people (also called degenerative joint disease - DJD), and rheumatoid arthritis, which can affect you at any age. They both affect the joints and cause inflammation, swelling, pain and joint stiffness. The underlying causes, according to Mercola, are very different, however.
Both of these types, Mercola writes in Important Details You Need to Know About Arthritis, are linked with inflammation and thus any natural remedies for inflammation will need consideration.
Although some anti-inflammatory medicines could be used, it is important to take into account the potential dangers many of these medications pose, such as liver damage, kidney failure and ulcers. Dr. Mercola especially warns about the medicines used for rheumatoid arthritis, which he says are "some of the most dangerous drugs used in medicine [including] immunosuppressants and anti-cancer agents"....
Dr. Mercola recommends omega 3s, especially from krill oil, to reduce arthritic inflammation. To reduce inflammation generally, it is important to stay well hydrated and ensure plenty of antioxidants, for example from chaga mushroom tea, broccoli sprouts, turmeric, colourful fruits and vegetables, such as berries, etc. Inflammation-causing foods should be eliminated: trans fats (hydrogenated oils), sugars, refined carbohydrates and gluten-containing foods. Staying clear from any allergy or intolerance -causing foods is important as well. (See food intolerance home test).
In addition, some natural treatment methods which require a qualified therapist can be considered:
"If your joints are damaged by infections (e.g. arthritis), then instead of operating on the joint [...] I recommend seeking prolotherapy (preferably using injections of aloe vera extracts into the joints) and autologous mesenchymal stem cell treatments." - David Wolfe, p. 232, Longevity Now

One of the effective arthritis home remedies can be to address the issue of calcification directly. As always, it is best to think about healing the body at many levels at once. So if you can address both inflammation and calcification at the same time, as well as use the rest of the arthritis relief methods discussed in this article, you will stand a much better chance at success than if you only make small changes and one method.
Think about it this way: If the expert opinions shared in this article are correct, then it means that something in your lifestyle has brought on arthritis. Accordingly, the quicker you change your lifestyle to better, the quicker relief you can find. And probably more changes at once will bring more desirable results.
"Eating conventional meat is one of the biggest contributors to calcification conditions in the body. Consistently consuming more than 100 grams of protein per day over decades of time contributes to calcification conditions from gout to arthritis to coronary plaques. [...] [The] bad calcium shows up in the flesh (meat) of the animals after slaughter and can contaminate us if we consume this kind of food." - David Wolfe, p. 133 Longevity Now
Wolfe also explains that the more conventional dairy products we consume, the greater the calcification problems will be. You may want to read: The Benefits of Quitting Dairy.
In his Longevity Now Program, David Wolfe discusses many arthritis home remedies, so I recommend you read the book (summary here). Also, the article calcification summarizes David Wolfe's methods for removing bad calcium from the body.

Mercola recommends glucosamine, as especially beneficial for osteoarthritis symptom relief. He also says that the Indian herb, boswellia, has been used very effectively to treat joint-inflammation, and so has acupuncture.
(My acupuncture experience is explained here.)
An effective temporary remedy for pain has recently been found to be grounding. This is a new theory and perhaps difficult for many people from 'traditional' scientific knowledge backgrounds to appreciate. However I have personally found it effective and explain my experience in the article linked to above. David Wolfe also promotes grounding as a very effective pain relief tool for most kinds of pain.
It is important to directly ground the body part that has the pain within it - i.e. to either have it in contact with wet earth or to use a grounding mat or a sheet on it. In other words, grounding your feet when your head is hurting might not provide as effective remedy. Grounding works by supplying negative electrons (negative ions) to the body and thus balancing the body's electricity:
"Negative electrons are powerful antioxidants. The Earth is the best source of these electrons. Not having enough negative electrons leads to free-radical damage and autoimmune conditions such as osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia." - David Wolfe, p. 310, Longevity Now
I know someone with arthritis who found temporary pain relief from Wobenzym cream. Some of the active ingredients in this are enzymes and menthol, but according to the sales lady in the health shop, it has nanotechnology in it.
It was very effective for temporary pain relief, however, and perhaps worth considering as a temporary solution. There are chemicals present in this so-called 'natural' cream but I suspect that they are mostly to make it into a cream consistency and to preserve it. There is also an enzyme supplement of the same name which has less chemicals in it but I have no knowledge of its effectiveness.

Another arthritis home remedy to consider is to overcome acidity, or acidosis, and to balance the body pH so that it is alkaline enough.
"The alkaline-producing bounties of living vegetarian/ vegan cuisine combat the systematic acidity that is one of the primary causes of rheumatic dysfunctions." - Dr. Brian Clement, p. 111, Longevity, Enjoying Long Life Without Limits.
Dr. Robert Morse has a good explanation of the connection between inflammation and acidic body pH in his book, 'The Detox Miracle Sourcebook':
"Inflammation simply means that the body is on fire. [...] ... inflammation is caused by acidosis from what you eat, drink, breathe, what you put on your skin, what you think and what you feel.
"Inflammation is diagnosed as an 'itis'. Where the inflammation is discovered will determine what type of 'itis' it is. An example of this is arthritis, which is inflammation of the joints. 'Itis's' are treated by the allopathic medical community with a steroid shot - like cortisone, prednisone, or the like. Since we know that the adrenal glands use cholesterol to make cortical-steroids, the question to ask is: 'Why don't my adrenal glands produce adequate amounts of their own cortisone?' The answer is that if the adrenal glands are weak or underactive in the tissue that produces these steroids, the body cannot adequately defend itself against this strong inflammation.
"Lacking adequate steroids, the body then has no choice but to turn to water and electrolytes in an attempt to manage this 'fire'. But water and electrolytes also cause edema (swelling) in the area of inflammation. The liver will also begin to increase its production of cholesterol, thus giving the body additional anti-inflammatory compounds. Cholesterol is one of the main ingredients of steroids.
"All of these anti-inflammatory compounds are essential to the protection of a cell against the highly damaging effects of acids. The creation of plaque occurs naturally, chemically, in an acid environment. Alkalization is essential for the removal of this 'protective shield' of plaque which itself can become a problem. [...]
"Alkalization is key to tissue regeneration, to the breaking up of stones, and to the removal of plaqued lipids. Lipid plaquing from inflammation/ acidosis causes poor circulation [...] Acidosis also creates a coagulating of fats and nutrients, which also leads to strokes, heart attacks, memory loss, graying of hair, pain in tissues, stone formation and other conditions.
"It is not difficult to remove this type of plaque and to break up lipid-type stones if you consume an 80-100 percent raw food diet. Raw foods remove inflammation through alkalization and increased steroid production, thus dissolving stones and plaqued lipids. [...] Such restoration does not take very long if you are persistent with the diet."
- Dr. Robert Morse

The Hippocrates Health Institute retreat is not cheap, and not a home remedy, but it does provide lots of natural remedies for arthritis and other ills all in one package!
You can approach Hippocrates Health Institute for 'scholarships' if you can find the money for a flight ticket there (to Florida) - they might be able to give you a discount or to accommodate you. I'm including a testimonial below to encourage you that there are natural methods to healing arthritis that work.
The approach of Hippocrates Health Institute is based on natural food and a combination of many natural therapies. Dr. Brian Clement, one of the Directors, has published many books and provides plenty of free information on his website. You can also find him on YouTube and their magazine, Healing Our World, can be ordered free as a paper copy to your door. All the past issues are also available in electronic form on their website. This is one of the stories from Hippocrates Health Institute website:
"After being diagnosed with coronary artery disease, diabetes, hepatic cellular disease, diabetic neuropathy and diabetic retinopathy I was also diagnosed with degenerative arthritis in my neck and spine and a severe disc disease. I was taking approximately 30 pills and three to five insulin shots a day and was getting sicker and weaker. Several doctors determined that I needed surgery, but they refused to do it locally. My condition was so severe that they would only do surgery in a university setting. I was dying slowly; however, after two months in bed I decided simultaneously that I did not want to live like that and I was unwilling to die.
"A friend of mine, who saved his life at Hippocrates in 1998, insisted I go there for one of the Thursday night Save Your Life meetings. Within two weeks, I had checked into Hippocrates and my healthy adventure began. I will never forget Enid, the friendly staff member who taxied me around in a golf cart because I was too sick to manage on my own.
"At first, I was reluctant to take the enemas, drink the wheatgrass and eat only vegetables; I was a meat and potatoes man! After meeting with Brian, though, I decided that I had nothing to lose, and joined in the program.
"At first it was hard. In fact, within a short time, I started feeling sicker because of the detoxification process. But the miracle was starting to happen...I no longer needed to take the insulin shots and my stomach was returning to normal — I had no more swelling or sores.
"By the second week, I felt so much better that I had completely stopped my cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes medication. I then started into a light exercise program. WOW WHAT A DIFFERENCE!
"By the third week, I was walking a mile a day! Much had changed during my three weeks at Hippocrates: not only did they teach me to heal my body, but with all the counselling and therapies, they also helped me heal my mind and soul. So, not only am I now a much healthier person, I am also happier."

Dr. Mercola suggests that vitamin D and sunlight are crucial parts of a holistic arthritis home remedy package:
"Almost universally, autoimmune diseases have an underlying vitamin D deficiency. The further you go from the equator, the higher the incidence of RA [rheumatoid arthritis] becomes in the population. [...] It is virtual malpractice and negligence if you have an autoimmune disease [...] and your vitamin D levels are not getting checked regularly by your physician."
Mercola continues:
"The second factor, which is also almost universally present in most all autoimmune diseases, is some kind of predisposing traumatic emotional insult that typically occurs before the age of five or six."
To treat this, he recommends a form of psychological acupressure called the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). This can be practised at home or with a specialist EFT therapist. For further information on Dr. Mercola's arthritis home remedy here.
Thus trauma release exercises may provide some benefit towards healing arthritis.
Dr. Robert Morse has an interesting theory of autoimmune diseases:
"Normal body cells that become damaged or weakened can appear as foreign antigens, inviting an immune response by macrophages, neutrophils, monocytes, etc. This stimulates the production of antibodies by B-lymphocytes to neutralize or destroy the cell if needed. [...] This is where the 'autoimmune' illusion is first created. When a cell changes its morphology through acidosis, toxic chemical influence, etc., this changes its signal to immune cells (the police), which are now considered foreign antigens or cells that can affect other cells and thus need to be eliminated."
- Dr. Robert Morse, p. 36, The Detox Miracle Sourcebook
In other words, Dr. Morse believes that cells which are damaged by too much acidity in the body, get attacked by the body's immune system, because they are not recognised as a healthy and useful part of the body.
This theory would explain why juice fasting and healthy alkaline diets show so much promise for healing arthritis.

Juice fasting could possibly provide the fastest and cheapest home remedy for arthritis.
In Paavo Airola's book: 'How to Keep Slim, Healthy and Young by Juice Fasting' he tells this story:
"When Mr H. arrived at our spa, he used a cane and could walk only a few yards with great difficulty. He had had arthritis for 35 years and underwent cortisone treatment 10 years previously. Due to severe painful neuritis in his legs below the knees, his nights were often sleepless. Only heavy doses of codeine-containing drugs made sleep possible. Even the slightest exertion caused shortness of breath due to his emphysema. He could not benefit from our thermal mineral baths and sauna because they were located 400 yards down a steep hill.
"The day we began the biological program with a two week juice fast, Mr. H asked me: 'I sure wish I could get down to the hot river and the baths. Do you think I will ever be able to do that?'
"'In a month or so you'll be hopping like a goat around here, even down to the river,' I promised him optimistically, concealing as well as I could my own doubts that such improvement could come so quickly, seeing how incapacitated he was.
"In less than three weeks Mr. H. was walking without his cane and one day he reported to me triumphantly that he had walked to the baths and up the hill all by himself - without his cane! After two two-week fasts on juices, herb teas and vegetable broth, with an intermediate special arthritic diet including vitamin and mineral supplements, plus special packs, hot and cold showers, dry brush massage and a series of special exercises, Mr. H. told me one day that he walked over two miles up and down the steep hills and along the river and 'without any pain in his knees or shortness of breath!'
"'It's great! I can't believe it,' said Mr. H gratefully."

Herbs, superfoods and supplements can be used as natural arthritis home remedies, especially if combined with other approaches discussed in this article.
David Wolfe recommends the following herbs, superfoods and supplements for arthritis in his book 'Longevity Now':
For joint health, Wolfe highlights the importance of enough sulfur, silica, omega 3 fatty acids, hydrogen, ormus minerals and polysaccharides (from aloe vera, noni, medicinal mushrooms etc.).
Wolfe goes by the theory that calcification, and thus arthritis, is caused by nanobacteria, also called 'calcium-forming organisms', which can get into our bodies from tap water, among other things.
"It is known from scientific evidence that the more MSM and biologically available sulphur we take, the more difficult it is for calcium-forming organisms to 'get hold of us'. These organisms are like barnacles or oysters, and they are always looking for a stagnant part of our body that is easy to hook on to. When we take in enough sulphur, the areas where calcium-forming organisms like to grow - for example, our joints - become so 'slippery' that the nanobacteria can no longer hold on and continue to grow. MSM has a long history of helping improve conditions known to be connected to the production of bad calcium, including all arthritic conditions, bursitis, damaged joints, and inflammation."
- David Wolfe, p. 226 Longevity Now
In addition to this, MSM also converts bad insoluble calcium into good bio-available calcium, he says.
Enzymes: According to David Wolfe, bromelain has traditionally been used to reduce the symptoms of calcium-induced inflammation associated with osteoarthritis.

One of the strangest arthritis home remedies might be getting stung by a bee!
"Bee venom has been known to spontaneously (directly and/or homeopathically) reverse arthritic conditions and other calcification challenges. National Geographic magazine reported remission of the calcification condition known as ankylosing spondylitis following a scorpion sting. [...] Many venoms and poisons (such as bee venom, scorpion venom, the Amazonian kambo frog medicine, and others) activate the immune system and may improve longevity."
- p. 121, Longevity Now, David Wolfe
Some natural therapists provide 'apitherapy' treatment, which is another word for bee venom therapy, although it seems like an unusual approach.
David Wolfe has even made a link between hormonal imbalances and arthritis. According to him low levels of sex hormones, which are our health hormones, as well as estrogen toxicity, are found in arthritic people.
Wolfe explains how decreasing hormone levels are a major underlying factor in a variety of health problems, including calcification and the related problems of cardiovascular disease and arthritis.
He writes that many aphrodisiac plants can be used to boost sex hormones. Although keep in mind that many of these require regular and long-term intake to work effectively.
From reading Wolfe's explanation of hormones in Longevity Now, it seems to me that both estrogen dominance and calcification may be caused by a slow metabolism and a weak endocrine system. All hormones in the human body are produced by different glands (both the endocrine and exorcine systems), so the weaker the glands the less hormones get secreted. And when your metabolic rate (oxidation rate) improves, the glands start producing more hormones.
It would thus seem that strengthening the metabolic efficiency of the body hold some promise in helping to heal arthritis.
Addressing adrenal fatigue, sugar addiction and carbohydrate sensitivity can go a long way towards improving metabolic efficiency.
For more information on how to balance hormones of both sexes, but especially women's, read: "Natural Remedies for Menstrual Cramps", Female Hormone Imbalance Diet and Hormone Diet.
We hope that this article helps you to find the arthritis home remedy that works for you.

Books - Natural Remedies for Arthritis
According to Dr. Robert Rowen, ozone therapy is very beneficial for osteoarthritis, Dr. Mercola reports (6).
In arthritis, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are involved in degenerative changes, causing swelling of joints and tendons, joint bone deterioration, dryness of joints, stiffness, and excruciating pain. Allergies are often involved.
"Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are necessary to produce secretions that lubricate our joints. They are also required to build and deposit bone material, and used to transport minerals. EFAs are also required to build and deposit bone material, and used to transport minerals. EFAs are also required to build our cells' membranes; those that line our digestive tract help prevent the entrance of undigested foreign materials into our body. They also strengthen immune cells that inhabit all body surfaces.
"Further, EFAs and fats and oils of any kind slow down stomach emptying time and thereby allow more time for the digestion of foods - especially proteins that could cause allergic reactions - to be completed. Digestive enzymes and ginger help arthritics, at least partly because they promote good digestion. Completely digested proteins turn into amino acids, which cannot cause allergic reactions. [...]
"EFAs are also required for immune system functions.
"Other nutrients such as magnesium, calcium, and vitamins B6 and D may be helpful. Vitamin C and zinc help immune functions, healing, and tissue construction. Optimum amounts of all nutrients are necessary for health. [...]
"It is now clear that allergic reactions play an important part in most arthritic and 'rheumatic' complaints."
- Udo Erasmus, in 'Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill', p. 354-355
Note that a systemic (chronic) candida infection can cause arthritis-like symptoms.
Histamine intolerance has been linked to osteoarthritis.
