Eye Iridology

A year ago I found out that Robert Morse (N.D.) was doing free iris analyses on You Tube. I sent photos of my eyes to him for an eye iridology reading, which generally is meant to reveal which organs and parts of the body are weak, where there is mucus congestion, whether you have strong genes and many other holistic health related aspects about your body as well.

eye iridology

The idea behind iridology is that the iris has many nerve endings, just like the bottoms of your feet and your hands. It is thus based on similar theories about the body's interconnected nervous system and energy meridians as the practices of reflexology, acupuncture and acupressure. Eye iridology can also been called eye reflexology.

From the start I have been sceptical of this science. The first thing that strikes me is that it seems too good to be true. How could we possibly read the body's health like an open book just by looking at the eye? It would be as if the body was designed to give us a fairly up-to-date news report on what is happening in the world inside!

My Eye Iridology Reading:

Since Robert Morse at the time provided the readings for free, I had to wait a year before getting my results. (I think he has since started to charge a $10 fee.) This is what I received via email from his secretary:

  • Heavy lymph in the brain area, sinuses, head, throat, jaw and pituitary
  • Chronic lymph in the lungs, bronchus and back
  • Chronic adrenal weakness
  • Congestion and lymph in the bowels, especially transverse bowel
  • Heavy lymph in the spleen area

On the positive side you have excellent genes and a strong constitution. There really is no notable skin weakness, and this is good! Dr. Morse would not be surprised if you had back and/ or leg issues during your detox, and a healing crisis involving your respiratory system. You will get all of that mucus out! Work on strengthening the kidneys and adrenals. He advises that you douche with the Heal All Tea to strengthen the uterus and vaginal wall as there was some lymph congestion in that area of the iris as well.

I got a little excited about the reading since it seemed quite accurate on the first thought. I certainly had sinus congestion which was linked to eating cheese and sugar. My throat has similar problems with congestion and although mucus in the brain seemed like a strange idea, I thought, perhaps it is linked to the same problem... I wanted to keep an open mind.

Lymph/ mucus in the lungs and related areas would make perfect sense as well as I sometimes experience difficulties in breathing (similar to asthma chest tightness).

Adrenal weakness was diagnosed by hair mineral analysis as well a year ago and has since (according to the same analysis) been healed. Remember that these eye pictures were taken a year ago, in April 2013. So it made sense that this would show in the iris as well.

And of course I got excited about the idea that I had strong genes!

Strengthening the kidneys made perfect sense since that was what the Chinese Doctor had also advised me to do.

The impressive part is that going through my emails with Jen from 'Nature's Botanical Pharmacy', which is Robert Morse's website, it seems that I gave Robert Morse no information whatsoever about my health history. In that way the iris reading seems to have been surprisingly accurate!

So I started reading about iris analysis and eye iridology basics online, took new pictures of my eyes today (July 2014) and mapped out the different areas of the eyes compared to the iridology chart - comparing my iris pictures from last year to the iris pics of today.

Below are diagrams of what I could make out (keep in mind that this is my very first attempt to read the iris and don't have any experience or training in the field whatsoever). To see the images bigger, right-click on them and choose: 'view image'. Then you can also zoom in with pressing 'Ctrl' and '+' at the same time (apple-click and apple-+ on Macs).

The analysis seemed very interesting and revealing. The more I looked at the image of my iris (blown up in size) on the computer, the more I thought it seemed like the white areas must have shown congestion of some kind, lymph and mucus. But why this would be the case seemed mysterious - as if the nerves themselves got lymph congestion in them and transported it to the eye! Could the eye have mucus congestion within it?

Furthermore on the first analysis it seemed that the mucus had moved within the year from the other organs more towards the middle of the eye, towards colon and intestines... and so my mind started theorising whether that meant that the mucus was moving towards the elimination organs to be cleaned out of the body.

Eye Iridology Criticism

When I studied the two iris images further, I realized that both the brown spots and the white areas had moved closer towards the middle of the eye in the second picture. I started worrying that this might have something to do with the pupil size. In the second image I tried to get as much light into the eye as possible because I thought that some colour areas might be hidden behind the black pupil! I guess this was quite a silly idea anatomically but anyway, I had never studied the anatomy of the eye before.

So I took another picture where my eye had less light shining into it, so that the pupil was larger. I compared this image with the other two and noticed that as the iris got smaller, it 'pulled' the rest of the colour areas of the eye with it. Overlaying this with the previous diagrams of white (mucus) areas of the iris (above), I found out that the white areas had now moved back close to the 2013 places. I drew the following conclusion:

If the areas of colour in the eye move inwards and outwards with the pupil size change, then an iridology analysis cannot be accurately done by simply overlaying an iridology chart over the eye in Photoshop. A more involved and complex analysis would be needed.

As a result of this simple experiment I would like to draw a somewhat hasty conclusion that eye iridology can be quite an inaccurate science and that the reliability of the iridology analysis depends to a large degree on the skill of the practitioner. This is not really a fair conclusion since I have no training in iris analysis but it seems to me that since the eye is dynamic and keeps adjusting itself constantly according to light, it requires quite a bit of skill to be able to map the areas of the iridology chart to the eye. It can probably be done to some degree at least but I also think there are probably many practitioners who give less than accurate readings.

As you notice from the pictures on this page, the colour of the eye has also completely changed in the before and after pictures. This is just because of the different kind of camera and lighting I used when taking each picture.

What Can Iridology Reveal on the Basis of the Iris

Just as the Chinese Doctor can tell quite a bit from looking at the tongue and the face of the person, and from taking their pulse, so I am sure the eyes can reveal quite a bit about a person's health. As mentioned above I am suspicious about the accuracy of the famous iridology chart itself, since I know for a fact that the meridians and acupressure points also vary slightly from person to person (Donna Eden writes about this in her book: 'Energy Medicine').

On the other hand I can appreciate that there is a huge deal we don't know yet about the human body so I am open to the thought that there are many skilled iris readers out there. Especially as many points in the short reading I received - recorded above - seemed surprisingly accurate.

There are the other bits of analysis I did on my left iris before learning to appreciate that the pupil size change moves all the colour spots:

iridology, discolouration, eye reading, left iris
Areas of discolouration (brown) showing deteriorating organs, April 2013.
iridology, discolouration, eye reading, left iris
Brown spots have become less, showing recovering internal organs. July 2014. Note that any colour variations indicate problem areas... In a brown eye these would show differently from a blue eye.

Since the colour variations in the eye seem to have got less over the year I would think that this is a sign of recovering inner organs, despite the fact that I may have not mapped the areas correctly.

What is quite curious as well is that the fibers of the eye seem to be less wavy and more straight as they move from the centre of the iris towards the edges. This gives the appearance of a more even texture and a 'finer weave'. I am not sure whether the eye just looks different because I didn't manage to get the second picture to be as sharp as the first one, or whether the fibers have changed somehow over the year. I read that a 'closer weave' is a good thing but am not sure whether the straight fibers are somehow indicative of better strength in the corresponding organs or not.

Also, in the earlier pictures the white areas of mucus congestion seem to have got less over the year, regardless of the positioning of the white areas.

Holes in the Fiber Areas of the Eye - Lacunae

The third mapping was of the so called 'holes' in the iris, also called 'lacunae' and contrasted with ridges. You can better appreciate these names if you have seen the recent amazing microscopic images of the eye by Armenian Photographer Suren Manvelyan, which make the fibers of the eye look like rocky landscapes: mountains and valleys ( Surenmanvelyan.com ).

I found it difficult to distinguish which parts of the eye were a healthy deep blue colour, and which were black 'holes'. But I publish the images here anyway, perhaps it promotes an interesting conversation and hopefully someone with more experience can point out to me where I am going right and wrong with this analysis!

In addition, an iris image can show other irregularities, such as 'radii solaris', which look like black spokes of a wheel radiating out of the centre. These are said to indicate toxins spreading from the intestines to the relevant organs depending on their location on the map. I found two 'minor rays' close to the pupil but none extending all the way to the edge.

Discolouration with yellow tint can indicate that the liver and gallbladder need cleansing. However, I always thought that yellow in the eye-whites indicated the same thing. [I later found out that natural ionic mineral supplementation made my eye-whites whiter and bright.]

Sodium rings are cloudy white rings around the iris in the circulation zone and can indicate sodium deposits. I couldn't find any of these on my eyes.

A proper iris analysis looks at both eyes, the right and the left. My right eye showed similar discolourations and other variations at similar locations and I found it quite interesting that there was a lot of symmetry between the two eyes.

Lymphatic rosary beads are white spots in a circular formation around the eye which are said to indicate lymph slowing down in a serious way. This can be due to serious lack of exercise and can cause symptoms such as bad breath, smelly sweat and skin problems. None of the these are visible in my eye pictures, luckily!

Nerve rings are ring-shaped formation like ripples in between the pupil and the edge of the eye extending across large parts of the iris in circular or curved form. None were visible in my eyes but these would show nervousness and nervous system weakness according to some iridology reports.

Difficulty in Taking a Good Iris Photograph

I found it very difficult to manage a good photograph of an iris. A mobile phone camera definitely didn't cut it.

The best way I found in the end was to use a manual setting of a digital SLR, set it to small aperture (16), 1/60s exposure, 100 ISO (you may have to tweak these depending on the environment and eye colour), and then use a bright pen light to shine light in the eye and take a picture as close to the eye as possible. Impossible to do on your own, you need someone to help. You have to practice keeping your eye wide open while moving the spot where you look until the whole iris is captured on camera. The reflection from the light would ideally fall over the pupil so that all the colour areas of the eye are visible in the picture! After all this you will have to take the picture to your computer and increase the size until the iris fibers can be seen. Needless to say the picture has to also be very accurately focused on the eye. All of this is quite tricky. I haven't searched whether there are specialist iris photography lenses or cameras that would incorporate a light source and make the process easier.

The professional eye iridologist of course has the advantage of using an iriscope and controlled lighting conditions so that images that are easier to compare from one visit to the next.

Eye Iridology Quotes

Some theory underlying eye iridology from www.marysherbs.com:

"Most people know that when the roots of a plant have been injured or aren't receiving the nutrients or moisture they need, the first signs of the decline in the health of the plant will be found in the outer-most part of the leaves.

"Apply that to the nerve endings that are running throughout your body. If, for instance, your pancreas has been damaged or lacking a nutrient or is in poor health, the first sign of the decline in the health of the pancreas will be found in the outermost part of the nerve endings, many of which end in the iris of the eye. [...]

"Although exact neurological mechanisms of the phenomenon is not fully understood, it seems that when an organ or body system is in poor health the nerve running from that body part will start to recede, somewhat like a leaf wilts. When it does it draws with it various degrees of the layers of fibers which make up the color of the iris of the eyes, leaving darkened marks called lesions."
